Simply 'getting rid' of something should be enough to cut it out completely, but we all know that's never the case. I feel really terrible for Luke; here's something he has to remind him of his loving mother, and albeit it's a bit different way of remembering, it's something of his own. That's like going to a funeral and mutiliating the face or something. I know he's too young to have done somethign about it then, but he should have at least told SOMEONE. Even if they are his adopted parents they have no right to do something that heinous. You win again at making heart's break.
